Libya: Militia members gather in Ghut al Romman ahead of planned protest in Tripoli on September 13

Libya News Alert

Militia members gather in Ghut al Romman ahead of planned anti-government protest in Tripoli on September 13; avoid all demonstrations and gatherings

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/12/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/14/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Tripoli). COUNTRY/REGION Tripoli

Local sources report that members of the Misratan Al Sammoud Brigade militia have gathered in the Ghut al Romman area around 30km (20 miles) east of Tripoli on the evening of Saturday, September 12, ahead of a planned anti-government protest in the capital. The group, led by Al Sammoud Brigade commander Salah Badi, is expected to move to Tripoli on Sunday, September 13, where they intend to stage a demonstration outside the Prime Minister's office in protest at recent government appointments. Salah Badi's supporters reportedly intend to barricade the Prime Minister's compound in the capital from around 09:00 (local time) on Sunday, but it is currently unclear whether other pro-government forces intend to disrupt the planned protest.

Localized disruptions are likely in central Tripoli, as well as on routes leading into the city from the east on Sunday, with an increased risk of armed clashes around protest sites.

Those in Tripoli are advised to avoid the area around the Prime Minister's office on Sunday due to the risk of crowd disturbances and armed clashes, monitor developments, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
