Petrol stations in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) have been reporting diesel shortages for over two weeks as of Tuesday, September 15. Reports indicate that the shortage of fuel has not affected fuel stations outside of the CBD. According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the shortage is a result of an increase in the cost of importing fuel and authorities are reportedly planning to set up a diesel standardization fund in efforts to prevent future price fluctuations.
Similar shortages often result in longer queues at gas stations and possible increases in the prices of fuel which leads to increased prices on public transport services. Associated demonstrations over the shortage or in response to an increase in fuel prices cannot be ruled out and should be avoided; clashes between security forces and protesters are also possible if gatherings are held.
Those in Nairobi are advised to monitor the situation, fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations.
