Security operations ongoing following mass prison break in Moroto (Northern region) on September 16; avoid area

Security operations are ongoing in Moroto (Northern region) following a mass prison break where around 200 inmates are believed to have escaped from a local penitentiary on Wednesday, September 16. The fugitives are suspected to be positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). They took at least 36 weapons with them and reportedly fatally shot a soldier in an exchange of gunfire. Most escapees reportedly headed to the Mount Moroto area.

A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the coming days as police and military personnel work to recapture inmates.


Individuals in Moroto and surrounding affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the vicinity of the incident, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
