Event

Demonstrators affiliated with unions and anti-fascist groups will gather in Athens on Friday, September 18, to mark the seventh anniversary of the murder of a musician, Pavlos Fyssas. Protesters will gather at Nikis Square from 18:00 (local time). Additional gatherings are also possible in other areas of the city, including outside the Golden Dawn party's office in Korai Square.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites, along with disruptions to overland travel.

Context

Pavlos Fyssas' murder in September 2013 triggered an investigation into the far-right Golden Dawn party. Golden Dawn is currently subject to a court trial. Among charges that prosecutors are bringing against Golden Dawn is the murder of Fyssas as well as a series of attacks on members of the All-Workers Militant Front (PAME) trade union and attacks on migrants. The trial has prompted a series of protests.

Advice

Individuals in Athens are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution.
