Haiti: Protests expected in Port-au-Prince on September 20

Haiti News Alert

Protests expected in downtown Port-au-Prince on September 20; avoid all demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/19/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/21/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Port-au-Prince). COUNTRY/REGION Port-au-Prince

The US embassy in Port-au-Prince has issued a security message warning of protests planned to be held in the capital on Sunday, September 20. Demonstrators are expected to gather at the Champ de Mars and march via Rue Capois, Lalue, Avenue Martin Luther King, Nazon, Carrefour Aeroport, Route de Delmas, Delmas 32, Bourdon, Avenue John Brown, Bois Verna, Rue Christophe, Rue Magny before returning to the Champ de Mars.

Sunday's demonstration is intended to be peaceful. However, protests in Haiti can quickly escalate and frequently involve clashes between demonstrators and security forces. A heightened security presence is likely along the planned protest route, with an associated risk of localized travel disruptions.

Those in Port-au-Prince are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate localized disruptions to transportation and business operations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
