Protesters gathered in Maralal (Samburu county) on Saturday, September 19, to demonstrate against recent killings by armed bandits in nearby Baragoi. The students and leaders were reportedly marching through the town as they made their way towards Samburu County Commissioner's office to present a petition. Tear gas was deployed by police to disperse the protesters as they attempted to enter the county commissioner's compound. At least four of the protesters were arrested during the event.
A heightened security presence and disruption in the vicinity of the rally are expected. Further associated protests are possible in the near term.
Those in Maralal are advised to monitor developments, avoid all gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
