New Caledonia's anti-independence movement intends to hold an event in Ko We Kara, north of Nouméa, on Sunday, September 20. Approximately 100 people have signed up to attend the event, which is expected to be peaceful. The event follows from a pro-independence rally that took place in Nouméa on Saturday, September 19, where up to 200 youth members of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) marched between the Vallée-du-Tir to the place du Mwa Ka. The demonstration went by peacefully. Another rally was held at Mont-Dore where 100 people gathered to commemorate the death of independence-figure Pierre Declercq, who was assassinated on September 19, 1981.

Further rallies related to the October 4 independence referendum are expected in the coming days. Disruption to transportation and business is possible in the vicinity of demonstrations.

Individuals in New Caledonia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any demonstration, protest, or mass gathering, and to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
