TIMEFRAME expected from 9/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/21/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Calcutta). COUNTRY/REGION Asifabad district, Telangana state

Armed police killed two suspected Maoist insurgents in an exchange of fire in Asifabad district (Telangana state) on the evening of Saturday, September 19. The incident occurred in the Kadamba forest area as security forces were conducting a search operation in the area following reports of Naxalite being spotted. In the last month, police report that there has been an increase in insurgent activity in rural areas of Telangana state, leading to an increase in security operations by police forces.

A heightened security presence is expected in the Asifabad district over the near term. Further security operations are likely in the coming days, which could result in further clashes with militants.

Maoist rebels are believed to be present in at least 20 Indian states, including Telangana; however, they are most active in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Orissa. Members of the group, also known as Naxalites, have been active since 1967 and call for more resources to be devoted to poor, rural communities.

Those present in Telangana state are advised to exercise extra caution in rural areas due to the risk of rebel activity and to monitor the situation.
