Indian police arrest alleged Al-Qaeda militants in West Bengal and Kerala states on September 19; highlights risk of terrorism

Event

Indian police reported the arrest of nine alleged Al-Qaeda militants in the states of West Bengal and Kerala on Saturday, September 19. The group was reportedly preparing to strike targets throughout India, including in New Delhi. Six of the militants were arrested in the eastern state of West Bengal, while three were apprehended in Kerala, in the south of the country. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) claimed that the individuals were linked to a Pakistan-supported Al-Qaeda cell. The NIA reportedly seized domestically-made firearms and body armor, as well as sharp weapons.

Further counter-terrorism operations in India are possible over the near term.
