French authorities report that heavy rain has caused flash flooding in areas of the Cevennes region as of Sunday, September 20. Two people have been reported missing due to the floods and emergency services have mobilized helicopters and hundreds of personnel to assist residents in the region. Roadways, water, and electricity have also been cut off in certain locations. The French Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin has stated that dozens of residents have thus far been rescued from floodwaters and hundreds have been given emergency shelter. Rescue efforts are expected to continue over the coming days.
Transportation disruption and a heightened emergency personnel presence should be expected in the area over the near term.
Those in the Cevennes region and surrounding areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
