Afghanistan News Alert

Roadside IED blast leaves one dead and several injured in Paktika province September 19; similar attacks likely in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/21/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/22/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Paktika province

Event

On Saturday, September 19, at least one police commissioner was killed and several more injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near the provincial capital Sharan (Paktika province). According to media sources, the police convoy struck the roadside device in the early hours of the morning. No group has claimed immediate responsibility for the blast.

Similar attacks targeting civilians and security forces are likely across the country.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the ANSF - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Those in Paktika province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
