Somali National Army (SNA) troops and Al-Shabaab militants reportedly clashed near Dhusamareb (Galmudug state) on Monday, September 21. Unconfirmed media sources indicate that the clashes took place in Miirdugul after an SNA convoy hit an improvised explosive device (IED). There are reports of ongoing security operations in the area, and the number of casualties is not yet verified.
Further clashes between security forces and Al-Shabaab militants are likely in the region in the near term.
Al-Shabaab continues to control large areas of southern and central Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western and UN-backed government
