Libya: Protest held in Benghazi September 21

Libya News Alert

Demonstration against corruption and living conditions held in Benghazi on September 21; avoid any further protests

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/22/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/24/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Tripoli). COUNTRY/REGION Benghazi

Event

Activists held a protest against corruption and deteriorating living conditions in Benghazi on Monday, September 21. There were also calls by the protesters for the creation of a civil state. Reports indicate that the demonstration was brought to an end when it was hijacked by pro-Libyan National Army (LNA) elements. One demonstrator was reportedly arrested for an argument with an LNA supporter.

Further protests are expected in the near term and a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are possible in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

Advice

Those in Benghazi are advised to monitor developments, anticipate localized disruptions, and heed any directives issued by local authorities. All demonstrations and political gatherings in Libya should be avoided due to the risk of incidental violence and aggressive crowd-dispersal operations by security forces.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
