Landslide kills two in Shillong (Meghalaya state) on September 24; residual disruptions likely over the near term

At least two people died after a landslide buried homes in Shillong (East Khasi Hills district; Meghalaya state) on Thursday, September 24, following heavy rains. Eight people have now died in Meghalaya state this month in rain-related incidents. Police and other emergency responders attended the scene and rescued nine families. Bridges have been damaged and other roads cut off in the region following days of incessant rain. Another five people were reportedly missing following another landslide in the Lower Lamparing area of Shillong on Friday, September 25.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast through Friday and into Saturday, September 26, meaning more landslides and associated disruptions to transport are possible.


Those in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid landslide-prone areas, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to local authorities' instructions.
