5.2-magnitude earthquake strikes near Golestan province along the Iran – Turkmenistan border on September 26; further aftershocks possible

On Saturday, September 26, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.2-magnitude earthquake on the Iran - Turkmenistan border, 133km (82mi) northeast of Gonbad Kavus (Golestan province). The earthquake struck at a depth of 10km (6mi) at 9:16 (local time). Several homes were damaged in the earthquake, although no casualties have yet been reported. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the area to assess the situation.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days. A residual disruption to transportation is likely over the near term.


Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g., under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
