Mexico News Alert

Pro- and anti-government protests planned in Mexico City for September 26; avoid protest sites

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/26/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/27/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Mexico_City). COUNTRY/REGION Mexico City

Several protests are planned in Mexico City for Saturday, September 26, with anti-government and pro-government groups expected to hold demonstrations throughout the Historic Centre district. A group in support of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) is expected to gather at the Palacio de Bellas Artes at 14:00 (local time), before marching to the Zócalo, while an anti-AMLO group is expected to hold a sit-in at the Zócalo. Meanwhile, a group of activists will stage a rally in commemoration of a group of 43 students that went missing in Iguala, Guerrero state in September 2016. They are expected to commence a march from the El Ángel de la Independencia monument to the Zócalo at 16:00.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are to be expected in the vicinity of protest sites, particularly around the Zócalo. Clashes between police and protesters, as well as between protest groups, cannot be ruled out.

Those in Mexico City are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid all protests or demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
