Tamil groups announce protests in Northern and Eastern provinces on September 28; follow government directives

Tamil groups and politicians have called for protests across the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka on Monday, September 28. The events have been called to condemn the government's recent ban of commemorative rallies of the 1987 death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) member Amirthalingam Thileepan, held on September 26. 

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are to be expected in the vicinity of the events.  


Those in the Northern and Eastern provinces are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
