At least 15 killed, thousands displaced in Kebbi state floods as of September 27; disruption to transport and business likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/27/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/30/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Kebbi state, Zamfara state, Sokoto state

Heavy rainfall and associated flooding have killed at least 15 people and displaced more than 5,000 across multiple Local Government Areas (LGA) in Kebbi state as of Sunday, September 27. The floods were caused by heavy and continued rainfall as well as the excess release of water from the Bakolori and Goronyo dams in neighboring Sokoto and Zamfara states. According to local sources, multiple NGOs have mobilized resources to reach flood-related victims.

Further rainfall is expected over the near term. Disruption to transportation, business, and utilities is likely.

Those in Kebbi state are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
