A military officer was reportedly killed on the evening of Sunday, September 27, in clashes with suspected militants in the South Waziristan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The army captain was reportedly leading a night patrol in the Shakai area when the group came under fire from a concealed position. The area has since been cordoned off whilst security forces conduct a search operation for the attackers.

Multiple security operations have been launched in the Waziristan region in recent weeks, with two soldiers previously being killed during a cordon and search operation in the Spalga area on September 19.

Further security operations are likely in the region in the medium term.

Those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Pakistan more generally, are advised to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity to security forces. Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence, some Western governments advise their citizens to reconsider travel to some areas of Pakistan, including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
