The Ministry of Interior announced on Monday, September 28, that two suspected militants were killed in a shoot-out with security personnel in Qalag district (Qalyubia governorate), 13 miles (21km) north-east of the capital Cairo. According to the ministry, weapons and ammunition were also seized during the counter-terrorism raid. The suspects were reportedly planning to carry out hostile operations in the country. The deceased were allegedly part of a terrorist cell targeted in counter-terrorism operations in April.
Further counter-terrorism operations are likely over the near term, and militant attacks cannot be ruled out.
Those in Egypt are advised to monitor developments, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, report any suspicious activity or items to security forces, remain vigilant when visiting areas susceptible to criminal activity (e.g. tourist sites, churches, international and government buildings, public transportation hubs, etc.), and anticipate similar security operations over the near term.
