Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has been sworn in and named the country's new Emir on Wednesday, September 30, following the death of Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah which occurred on Tuesday, September 29.

A 40-day period of mourning was announced on Tuesday and is set to continue. Sheikh Sabah, who was 91-years-old, had been ill for several months and was in the US receiving medical treatment. Government offices are to be closed for three days. Large gatherings and associated road closures are to be expected as Kuwaiti citizens gather to mourn the passing of the Emir.

Significant disruptions are likely in Kuwait over the near term.
