DRC: Security forces clash with militia in Irumu territory (Ituri province) September 30

DR Congo News Alert

Security forces engage FRPI militia in Irumu territory (Ituri province) on September 30; further clashes possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/1/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/3/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION Irumu, Ituri province

Event

Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) soldiers clashed with members of the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Force (FRPI) militia in Ituri province's Irumu territory overnight on Wednesday, September 30. The fighting occurred in the village of Gety when the militia attacked an FARDC camp following rumors that the local commander reportedly insulted the militia's leader. At least three soldiers, four militants, and two civilians were killed in the exchange of fire. The militia also set fire to the FARDC camp and looted the office of an NGO. Fighting has since subsided with the FARDC remaining in control of central Gety; however, the militia remain present in the area.

Further clashes between government forces and militia groups in the near term cannot be ruled out.

Context

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Advice

Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militia activity, monitor developments in their own area of operations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
