Clashes broke out between demonstrators and security forces in Luxor in the early hours of Thursday morning, October 1, after a local man was killed in an incident involving the police the previous night. Awais Al-Rawi was killed by police on Wednesday, September 30, after he allegedly took objection to them physically and verbally assaulting his elderly father as they came to his residence to arrest another family member. As residents came out to denounce the police's actions, confrontations erupted, and security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
There have been calls for further protests over the killing on Friday, October 2, and associated unrest is expected to take place in Luxor and could spread to other parts of the country over the coming days.
Those in Luxor and across Egypt are advised to monitor developments, avoid protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions, and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
