DRC: Rival Mai-Mai militias clash in Lubero territory (North Kivu province) October 1

DR Congo News Alert

Clashes between rival Mai-Mai militia groups leave six dead in Lubero territory (North Kivu province) on October 1; further clashes possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/2/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/4/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION Lubero territory (North Kivu province), North Kivu province

Clashes between the Congo Ebebi of Dragon and the Resistance Nationale Lumbiste (RNL) Mai-Mai militias resulted in six people killed and two others wounded in Lubero territory (North Kivu province) on Thursday, October 1. Fighting broke out when the RNL attacked Congo Ebebi of Dragon fighters in the village of Liboyo, captured eight members of the group, and forced the others to retreat. The clashes came despite the area reportedly being under the control of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).

Further clashes between government forces and militia groups in the near term cannot be ruled out.

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Those in North Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for militia activity, monitor developments in their own area of operations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
