Storm Alex has caused travel disruptions on Friday, October 2, as it moved over Brittany and Cotentin towards the Bay of Biscay. Alex brought winds of up to 186kph (116mph) overnight on Thursday, October 1, and rendered 80,000 people without power in Brittany. Trains in the area were also disrupted into Friday morning. Meanwhile, in Alpes-Maritime department, schools have been closed on Friday amid concerns that students may become stranded by heavy rainfall. Alex is expected to bring between 100mm (4in) and 150mm (6in) of rainfall across parts of France. Rainfall may reach up to 300mm (12in) in some areas, particularly in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments. A total of thirteen departments are currently under weather warnings due to the passage of Storm Alex with Alpes-Maritime being under a red alert (the highest in a four-tier scale) for heavy rainfall. A list of active weather alerts can be found of Meteo France's website.

Transportation disruptions resulting from inclement weather should be expected in the affected areas over the near term.

Those in France are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
