Emergency services in Alpes-Maritimes department (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region) have reported that at least 11 people are missing as of 23:01 (local time) on Friday, October 2, as Storm Alex impacts the region. Heavy rains have been ongoing in the department since Friday morning, which has caused a bridge in Saint-Martin-Vésubie to collapse. Some of those missing have reportedly been washed away by floodwaters and others authorities are merely looking to confirm their whereabouts. Two firefighters are among the missing. Météo France has issued the highest red warning level for rain and rough seas for the department through until 16:00 on Saturday, October 3. Many other eastern regions are under the next highest orange alert warning level.
Further heavy rain and rough seas are expected in the coming hours. Associated disruptions to transport and businesses are likely during the passing of the storm.
