Supporters of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party plan to hold a protest march in Kolkata on Saturday, October 3, to condemn sexual crimes following a high-profile recent gang-rape case. Participants will gather between the Birla Planetarium near the Victoria Memorial and the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Mayo Road at around 16:00 (local time). The demonstration is expected to be well attended and a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport are expected in the vicinity of the demonstrations.
A 19-year-old Dalit woman was attacked and raped by four men of a higher caste in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh state on September 14 and died in hospital following the attack. The incident has sparked anger amongst the Dalit community who claim they are denied equal protection under the law. The Bhim Army Dalit rights organization has called for nationwide protest following the victim's death. Protests have been witnessed in cities across across India, including Delhi, Hathras, and Kolkata, in recent days.
Those in Kolkata are advised to monitor developments, avoid protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions, and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
