The detonation of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) and an attack by unidentified gunmen on the governor's compound in Ghani Khail district (Nangarhar province) on Saturday, October 3, killed at least 22 people and wounded 40 others. Reports suggest that the blast occurred in the vicinity of the compound and security forces repulsed a number of attackers who attempted to enter the complex. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time.

Further attacks in Nangarhar province are likely over the near term.
