Emergency Management Southland (EMS) opened its emergency co-ordination center on Sunday, October 4, due to floods caused by heavy rain in the region. The EMS group controller Andrew McKay urged residents in the region to avoid non-essential travel, including in the city of Invercargill. Significant flooding has been reported in Riverton, Colac Bay, and Orepuki, with several roads reportedly blocked. Firefighters are helping to pump water out of some properties in Invercargill, including in the Banfield Road area.

Further rain is forecast in the area until at least Tuesday, October 6. Associated flooding and disruptions to transport, utilities, and businesses are expected in the coming days.

Those in Southland are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
