Police and humanitarian workers reported on Thursday, October 8, that at least eight people have been killed and thousands have fled after days of violent clashes between rival criminal gangs in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazaar district (Chittagong division). Police have arrested 12 people amidst the clashes as rival gangs have been competing for dominance over the sprawling settlements.
Further clashes between criminal gangs are possible in the near term and a heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the camps over the coming days.
Those in Cox's Bazaar district are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the vicinity of the camps where possible in the immediate term, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
