Zambia: Opposition groups plan to stage protest in Lusaka on October 11 despite police ban

Zambia News Alert

UPND and NDC youth groups to stage protests in Lusaka on October 11 despite being denied permission; unrest and localized disruptions likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/8/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/12/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lusaka). COUNTRY/REGION Lusaka

Event

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth groups have announced their intention to hold a demonstration in central Lusaka on Sunday, October 11, as part of a wider campaign of protests against Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson Essau Chulu. The groups had sought permission for the demonstration at the Freedom Statue in the center of the capital, but police have denied a permit for the march, citing the unavailability of resources, and officials have since threatened to aggressively crack down on any unauthorized gatherings. Despite the refusal of permission, UPND and NDC youth leaders have both stated that they intend to go ahead with the protest.

Smaller demonstrations were also planned in the city on Friday, October 9, but locations and timings have not been announced by organizers.

Sunday's protest is highly likely to be dispersed by security forces, and localized disruptions are expected on Kayombo Street and Independence Avenue, as well as surrounding areas.

Advice

Those in Zambia area advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and aggressive crowd dispersal operations by security forces. Travelers should monitor developments and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
