Groups of youths from the Yoruba and Hausa communities clashed in the Igbo-Olomu area of Ikorodu (Lagos state) on Thursday, October 8. Clashes between the two groups broke out following an alleged altercation which involved a Hausa motorcycle taxi driver and a Yoruba man who refused to pay his fare. Police and members of a local vigilante group, the Onyabo security outfit, deployed to the area to prevent further violence. Vehicular movement and business activity in the area was suspended during the unrest. Although casualties are feared, authorities have not yet provided information on the numbers of those potentially killed and wounded in the fighting.
Further clashes between the two groups are possible in the near term and a heightened security presence is likely in the near term.
Those in Ikorodu are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
