Gunfire has been reported near polling station 11 at Edo Lodge in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure (Ondo state) on Saturday, October 10. No fatalities were immediately reported; however, security forces have been deployed to the scene.
The reports come as people in Ondo state vote for their next governor on Saturday. The incumbent governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party will be challenged by Eyitayo Jegede of the main opposition party, the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), and 15 other candidates. The election is expected to be tightly contested as no party has managed to exert consistent control of the state, with Ondo having been governed by four different political parties since 1999.
A heightened security presence is likely in the vicinity of electoral-related events. Disruptions to businesses and other services are possible throughout polling day.
Those in Ondo state are advised to monitor developments and remain apprised of the political situation, avoid all public demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, avoid discussing politically sensitive topics in public, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
