Somalia News Alert

IED blast targets AMISOM troops near Shalanbood (Lower Shabelle region) on October 10, fatalities reported; further attacks likely in the region over the medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/10/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/12/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Lower Shabelle region, Shalanbood (Lower Shabelle region)

An improvised explosive device (IED) targeted African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces on the road between Shalanbood and the coastal town of Marka in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday, October 10. Reports indicate that at least two soldiers have been killed in the blast, although the casualty figure was not immediately confirmed. Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility for the attack. AMISOM personnel were reportedly conducting de-mining operations in the area at the time of the attack.

Further militant attacks targeting security forces are likely in the region in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Those in the area are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
