Event

An anti-government protest is expected in Bangkok on Friday, October 16, despite a ban in place restricting gatherings of five people or more. Pro-democracy activists have called for a rally at 17:00 (local time) at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok, following a protest there attended by tens of thousands of people late on Thursday afternoon. The protesters are demanding that Thai authorities release 20 activists arrested over the course of Thursday, as police cracked down on protest organizers. Around 40 people have been arrested since the start of the week. The Thai government announced an emergency decree at 04:00 on Thursday and cleared a protest site near Government House early in the morning.

Localized travel disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of the rally if it goes ahead and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Bangkok are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings, prepare for disruptions to transportation and business in areas affected by the demonstration, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
