Security forces intercept militia convoy in Itaguaí (Rio de Janeiro state) on October 15; further operations likely

On Thursday, October 15, forces from the Special Resources Coordination (CORE) and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) in Rio de Janeiro state intercepted a convoy of militiamen at a security post in Itaguaí during a security operation. Reportedly, after intercepting the convoy, security forces were attacked by the suspects, who were carrying rifles, machine guns, and pistols. Authorities stated that the confrontation started after suspected militia members shot a CORE officer. During the attack security forces killed at least 12 suspected militia members. The CORE officer who was shot has not sustained major injuries.

According to authorities, the convoy intercepted was formed by militia members which intelligence services in Rio de Janeiro state had been monitoring for about 15 days.

Further security operations are possible over the near term.
