Somalia News Alert

Roadside bomb blasts hit military convoys between Buloburde and Jalalaqsi (Hiraan region) on October 16; reports of casualties, further attacks likely in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/16/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/18/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Hiraan region, Buloburde, Jalalaqsi

Two improvised explosive device (IED) blasts struck a Somali National Army (SNA) and an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) convoy in the Hiraan region on Friday, October 16. Reports indicate that simultaneous roadside blasts occurred as the convoy was traveling between the towns of Buloburde and Jalalaqsi. Al-Shabaab have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that at least seven Somali soldiers were killed and four AMISOM troops were injured. However, the casualty numbers are not yet verified and those claimed by Al-Shabaab are often significantly inflated.

Further militant attacks targeting security forces are likely in the region in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Those in the area are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
