Israel News Alert

Rocket fire from Gaza targets Netiv Haasara area of southern Israel on October 16; retaliatory strikes likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/16/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/18/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Jerusalem). COUNTRY/REGION West Bank, Palestinian Territories

Event

At least one rocket was launched from Gaza into southern Israel on Friday night, October 16, according to Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) sources. Rocket sirens were activated in the town of Netiv Haasara, causing thousands to seek refuge in bomb shelters. The projectile reportedly landed in open ground and caused no damage or injuries.

Retaliatory strikes by the IDF on Hamas targets in Gaza are likely following the rocket attack. Further cross-border attacks are expected over the medium term.

Context

Rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza are common in Southern Israel; however, a majority of the attacks do not cause substantial damage or casualties. Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system has been successful in intercepting the more sophisticated ordnance. In most cases, Israel has responded to any cross-border projectile fire by launching airstrikes on Hamas targets within Gaza.

This is the first rocket attack from Gaza into Israel since October 5. On Sunday, October 11, a truce was reportedly agreed between Hamas and Israeli officials to halt cross-border attacks for a period of six months.

Advice

Those in the Gaza Strip and areas of Israel bordering the territory are advised to monitor developments and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
