Internet and mobile data outages reported in southern and central regions on October 17; review communications continuity plans

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/17/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/19/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Somalia

Widespread internet and mobile data outages were reported across large parts Somalia's southern and central regions on the morning of Saturday, October 17. Hormuud Telecom, the country's main telecommunications provider subsequently stated that the outage was due to unspecified maintenance but did not give a timeline for when services would be restored.

Further telecommunications disruptions are likely in the near term.

Saturday's internet outage follows a similar systems failure in July which saw several days of communications disruptions. However, it was unclear whether the earlier outage was the result of infrastructural failure or related to the removal of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire in a vote of no confidence.

Despite significant investment in recent years, Somalia's communications infrastructure remains fragile. In June and July 2017, the country experienced several weeks of internet outages after an undersea fibre-optic cable was partially severed, crippling its economy.

Those in Somalia should review communications and business continuity plans in light of the outages, including alternative sources such as satellite internet connections.
