Flash flooding across Cambodia has killed at least 18 people as of Saturday, October 17. Over 25,000 people from 19 provinces have been displaced due to a series of tropical storms that have affected the country since October 1. Among the worst affected provinces are Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, and Kandal, in addition to southwestern Phnom Penh. Authorities have stated that at least 51,133 houses have been inundated by floodwaters and major roads have been closed. The government has advised those living on plains, along waterways, and in mountainous areas to exercise vigilance between Saturday, and Monday, October 19, due to the effects of storm Saudel, which may bring additional flash flooding.
Further flooding and associated disruptions are likely in the coming days.
Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
