At least three people were killed as a group armed with crude weapons attacked people taking part in protests associated with the #EndSARS movement in Osogbo on Saturday, October 17. The incident occurred at around 16:00 (local time) as Governor Gboyega Oyetola addressed the crowd. The governor's convoy was also damaged by projectiles in the incident.
Further protests are likely to occur in the near term and associated violence may occur in the vicinity of any demonstrations.
A series of protests organized by the #ENDSARS social media campaign have been held across Nigeria over the past few months and have intensified in recent days, with demonstrations having often led to clashes between protesters and security forces. Unrest has continued despite an announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari that SARS would be disbanded and replaced by a new agency called SWAT, a move which protesters have rejected.
Those in Osun state are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the vicinity of any demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
