Angola News Alert

Protesters gather in Salinas (Banguela province) on October 16 to denounce recent evictions; avoid protests as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/18/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/20/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Luanda). COUNTRY/REGION Benguela

Protesters gathered in Salinas (Banguela province) on Friday, October 16, as demonstrations continue denouncing the eviction of residents from the neighborhood. Reportedly, some residents have been arrested and are being tried in relation to recent protests; however, the case, involving 14 residents, was reportedly suspended for reasons that are unclear. Residents see the suspension as the denial of their fundamental rights. Security forces dispersed protesters on Friday, although it was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties as a result.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the demonstrations. Further unrest relating to the issues is to be anticipated in the coming days.

Those in Salinas are advised to monitor developments, avoid large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
