Czech Republic News Alert

Police clash with protesters in central Prague on October 18; avoid protests

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/18/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/19/2020, 11:59 PM (Europe/Prague). COUNTRY/REGION Prague

Police have clashed with protesters who had gathered at Prague's Old City Square on Sunday, October 18, to denounce restrictions introduced by the government due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Law enforcement had intervened after the gathering exceeded the 500-person limit currently in place for public gatherings. Protesters attempted to break through the police cordon around the square and threw firecrackers at officers who responded by firing water cannon and carrying out arrests. Protesters remain present within the area despite organizers declaring the gathering over as of 15:30 (local time).

A continued police presence, with associated disruptions to overland travel, should be anticipated in the near term. Further clashes between protesters and police are possible in the near term.

Those in Prague are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the demonstration as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
