Afghanistan: Militants kill eight security force members in Kunduz province October 17

Afghanistan News Alert

Taliban militants kill eight security force members during attack in Kunduz province on October 17; further attacks likely over the medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/18/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/20/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Kunduz province

Event

At least eight local police and militia forces were killed during an attack by Taliban militants in Kunduz province on Saturday night, October 17. The attack took place at a checkpoint in Imam Sahib district at around 21:00 (local time). The militants also stole equipment belonging to the security forces. Additional security forces were deployed to the area; however, the militants had already fled by the time they arrived. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security operations are expected in the area following the incident and further attacks by militants are likely over the medium term.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the ANSF - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Those in Kunduz province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
