TIMEFRAME expected from 10/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 10/21/2020, 11:59 PM (US/Hawaii). COUNTRY/REGION Hawaii, Island of Hawai'i

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami advisory for Hawaii on Monday, October 19, following a 7.5-magnitude earthquake 91 km (57 mi) southeast of Sand Point in Alaska at around 10:54 (local time), followed by numerous aftershocks. Initially, the PTWC said there was no tsunami threat for Hawaii before an advisory was issued around six hours after the first quake struck. The center stressed no major tsunami was expected, but waves could pose a threat to swimmers and boaters. In the latest update at 17:55, the largest waves reported in Hawaii so far were 0.4 meters (1.2 ft) in Kahului, with sea-level changes also recorded at Hilo. As a precautionary measure, Hawaii County Civil Defense officials announced all beaches and low-lying coastal areas on Big Island would be closed for the day.

The threat may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

Those in Hawaii are advised to closely monitor the situation, stay away from coastal and low-lying areas in the immediate term as a precaution, await confirmation the threat has passed, and heed all directives issued by local authorities.
