Cameroon News Alert

Reports of injuries following IED explosion in Yaoundé’s Nsam area on November 1; avoid the area

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/1/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/3/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Yaoundé, Centre region

Emerging reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at a snack bar in the Nsam area of Yaoundé on Sunday evening, November 1. Reports state that several people were injured in the incident, although no fatalities were immediately reported. Responsibility for the blast was not immediately claimed; however, arrests have reportedly been made in relation to the incident.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Yaoundé in the near term.

Several small IED explosions have been reported in Yaoundé over the past several months. These explosions also caused little damage and only minor injuries, but the incidents have raised concerns over the potential terrorism threat in Yaoundé. Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombings, there has been speculation that they could be linked to the ongoing insurgency in the Anglophone Northwest and Southwest regions.

Those in Yaoundé are advised to monitor developments, anticipate an increased security presence in the city, and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
