Colombia: Demonstrators gather in Bogota November 1

Colombia News Alert

FARC activists gather in Bogota on November 1 to denounce violence; avoid protests as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/2/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/3/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Bogota). COUNTRY/REGION Bogotá

Thousands of former members of the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force (FARC) rebel group gathered in the capital Bogota on Sunday, November 1, to call for an end to violence. Participants of the rally reportedly marched towards Bolívar Square as they demanded more security, the implementation of the 2016 peace deal, and an end to the killings of former combatants. The rally seemingly remained peaceful.

Further associated demonstrations are possible in urban centers across the country. Localized disruptions and heightened security are likely at protest sites.

Reportedly, 236 former members of the demobilized FARC group have been killed since the signing of the 2016 peace deal, making the implementation of the deal a challenge. The deal allowed sone 13,000 members of FARC to demobilize from the protracted conflict which has left 260,000 dead and millions displaced.

Those in Colombia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
