A protest is scheduled to take place in Leipzig on Saturday, November 7. The demonstration has been organized by activists associated with the Lateral Thinking movement and is being held to protest against current restrictions in the country, previously implemented due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The demonstration is scheduled to take place at Augustusplatz, where participants of the protest will gather at approximately 13:00 (local time) before marching around the city center and returning to Augustusplatz for a demonstration at 18:00. Authorities further announced that approximately 20,000 people are expected to participate in the demonstrations. Counter protests have also been registered.
Public gatherings remain prohibited under current COVID-19 measures. Clashes between rival demonstrations as well as with police forces cannot be ruled out.
A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the gathering in the near term.
Those in Leipzig are advised to monitor developments regarding the protests, avoid all protests and political gatherings due to the risk of disruptions and unrest, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
