Police breaking up an illegal gathering in Callao (Lima district) shot and killed one person on Sunday, November 8. Police were responding to reports of a football match in the Urbanización Aeropuerto, which was being held despite a ban on gatherings due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A brawl broke out as police attempted to disperse the participants, resulting in a police officer opening fire. Two police officers were reportedly seriously injured during the incident.

A heightened security presence is likely in Callao over the near term, as police investigations into the incident continue. Protests over the excessive use of force cannot be ruled out.

Those in Callao are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid protests or demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
