Nigeria: Reports of Boko Haram attack in Gwoza November 8

Nigeria News Alert

Reports of Boko Haram attack in Gwoza (Borno state) on November 8; further attacks likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/9/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/10/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Gwoza, Borno State, Nigeria

Local media sources report that Boko Haram militants attacked the town of Gwoza (Borno state) late on Sunday November 8. The militants clashed with security forces present in the town, with initial reports indicating that there were several casualties. Further information is awaited.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in and around Gwoza over the near term as security forces respond to the incident. Further Boko Haram attacks in Borno state are highly likely.

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Those in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
